Rep. Mary Bono Mack will be one of the headliners at the California Republican Party’s fall convention.

The Palm Springs Republican will be giving what her office described as a major address on job creation and the economy. Bono Mack also will be honored at a dinner banquet, which is billed as a celebration of Republican women.

The convention runs Sept. 16-18 in Los Angeles.

It will be the most high-profile role Bono Mack had had at the twice-a-year event. In 2009, when the fall convention was held in Indian Wells, she delivered the closing remarks.

This year’s convention also features Reps. Michele Bachmann, Ron Paul and Thaddeus McCotter — all of whom are vying for the GOP presidential nomination.

By Paul C. Barton, MyDesert.com
PALM DESERT, Calif.

When White House officials warn of Congress triggering another worldwide financial crisis by not raising the limit on the national debt, Republican Rep. Devin Nunes refuses to scare.

Unless the White House agrees to Republican demands for significant “structural” spending reforms and economic-growth measures — especially related to oil drilling and other energy steps — the financial markets will be equally unimpressed, Nunes says.

The Central Californian’s refusal to be cowed by the predictions of the administration and many leading economists exemplifies how many Republican lawmakers feel, including those who identify with the tea party movement.

Rep. Mary Bono Mack, R-Palm Springs, also wants to see lawmakers make more cuts, spokesman Ken Johnson said Tuesday.

“As a U.S. senator in 2006, President Obama voted against raising our nation’s debt limit, citing a failure of leadership in Washington. Since then, America’s debt has skyrocketed and nearly doubled,” he said.

“Congresswoman Bono Mack believes it is time for the president to get serious about cutting nonessential government spending — and we should be looking at trillions of dollars in savings, not just billions — in order to get our economy turned around.”

By Sara Jerome – 03/17/11, TheHill.com

Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) is charging the Obama administration with letting trade deals “languish in limbo” at the direction of organized labor.

At a hearing Wednesday, she made a strong push for free trade, arguing that “America’s trade policies are stuck in the fax age.”

Bono Mack advocated for stalled agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama to move forward “immediately.”

She raised concerns that if the South Korea agreement is singularly approved this year, then the other deals may fall by the wayside.

“It’s disingenuous for the administration to say: ‘Let’s work together to create new jobs, but not if it means passing all three trade agreements together,’ she said at a hearing of the House Energy and Commerce Trade subcommittee, which she chairs.

Bono Mack hearkened back to the approval of an agreement with Peru four years ago — the same year Apple released the first iPhone.

“Since then, there have been three new generations of iPhones, two iPads and several new nano iPods — but not a single free trade agreement signed into law. Not one,” she said.

“That’s the kind of thinking that leads to a $46 billion U.S. trade deficit in January,” she said.

Bono Mack called for reinvigorating domestic manufacturing through sound trade policies.

“Let’s make ‘Made in America’ matter again by actually increasing jobs through expanded exports and trade,” she said.

Erica Felci

Republican Rep. Mary Bono Mack today expressed hope that she’ll be working with the Democratic White House to push forward her ideas for job creation.

Bono Mack — the newly-tapped chairwoman of the House Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade — outlined her ideas in a letter to President Obama last month. It includes regulatory fairness, rewarding innovation and opening more foreign markets to U.S. products.

Bono Mack said the White House responded earlier today, and now senior members of the administration are evaluating her ideas.

“Having been a small business owner, I can say that I know first and foremost that the greatest impediment to growing a business can be the government at times,” Bono Mack told reporters.

“The agenda we’re looking for in the Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade subcommittee is how to get government out of the way.”

Bono Mack in December learned she would lead the subcommittee that has influence over consumer affairs, interstate and foreign commerce, motor vehicle safety and the regulation of tourism and travel.

She outlined her goals to reporters this afternoon, an event that was held at her new district office in Palm Desert.

The subcommittee’s first hearing will be held in a few weeks.

Bono Mack today said the Democratic White House has spent two years being “very anti-business.” But she said she believes that’s changing.

Job creation and revitalizing the economy continues to drive the nation’s policy agenda. Unemployment statistics released today show the nation’s unemployment rate dipped to 9 percent in January.

“We have a long way to go,” Bono Mack said. “To this day, the economy is hurting and we’re hearing constantly about how people are struggling. … We need to once again feel that the next generation after us is going to be better off than we were.”

Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) introduced a resolution opposing the possibility that the United Nations could begin to regulate the Internet.

“It has become increasingly clear that international governmental organizations, such as the United Nations, have aspirations to become the epicenter of Internet governance. And I’m going to do everything I can to make sure this never happens,” she said in statement on Wednesday.

She said it is “bad enough” that “we have to fight to keep the Federal Communications Commission’s hands off the Internet; just imagine having to convince governments like Iran and China.”

The controversy surrounding WikiLeaks has provoked new calls for the U.N. to play an active role in Internet governance. The U.N. has opened a working group of member nations to consider changes to its Internet Governance Forum.

Bono Mack chairs the House Energy and Commerce Trade subcommittee.

WASHINGTON – Inland Southern California’s Republican House members are poised for action once their party takes control of the chamber next month.

Last month’s Election Day landslide delivered the GOP a comfortable House majority and, they say, a mandate to shrink government, slash federal spending and begin the work of undoing key initiatives undertaken by the Obama administration, including the sweeping health care law passed earlier this year.

“The conference is anxious to get back to work in the majority,” Rep. Mary Bono Mack, R-Palm Springs, said. “We are hearing the people more loudly and more clearly than the Democrats are.”

Under the departing Democratic regime, Republicans — who represent four-fifths of the region’s House delegation — frequently saw their bills stumble and die, often without any consideration. But with incoming GOP Speaker John Boehner controlling the floor and Republican lawmakers leading every House committee, Bono Mack and Reps. Ken Calvert, R-Corona, Jerry Lewis, R-Redlands, and Darrell Issa, R-Vista, will find an easier path for their legislative initiatives.

The region’s only Democratic House member, Rep. Joe Baca, of Rialto, may be the odd man out. But Baca maintained that he has forged good working relationships with area Republicans and would seek their support.

“I hope the Republicans are really serious about working on a bipartisan (basis),” Baca said. “I want to put big emphasis on continuing to straighten out our jobs in the Inland Empire.” …

Rep. Mary Bono Mack has made history as the first Republican woman chairperson of a powerful subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Bono Mack released a statement Thursday announcing the appointment and said she was honored to hold a gavel on the powerful Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade subcommittee.

It has influence over consumer affairs, interstate and foreign commerce, motor vehicle safety and regulation of tourism and travel.

As chairwoman, Bono Mack will be “on the frontlines of identifying wasteful programs, burdensome regulations and targeting areas to immediately cut federal spending,” she said.

“I am eager to hit the ground running at the start of the 112th Congress, and to work on issues that are important to constituents, consumers and the American people,” Bono Mack wrote in the statement.

“I will work with Chairman (Fred) Upton and my colleagues towards an era of less government and more economic certainty — fostering growth for the American economy.”

Bono Mack has served as a member of the committee since 2001. She was first elected to Congress in 1998 and won re-election Nov. 2.

Washington-House Republicans today joined Senate Republicans in adopting an earmark ban for the 112th Congress. The measure was offered by Rep.-elect Sean Duffy (R-WI), who was elected to the seat long held by Appropriations Chairman David Obey (D-WI). The Duffy motion was adopted by unanimous consent. Speaker-designate John Boehner (R-West Chester) issued the following statement:

“Earmarks have become a symbol of a Congress that has broken faith with the people. This earmark ban shows the American people we are listening and we are dead serious about ending business as usual in Washington. I applaud Rep.-elect Duffy for his leadership on this critical issue. He and the rest of his historic class of House freshmen are here because Washington Democrats refused to listen to the American people and stop the spending binge that threatens our children’s futures.

“House and Senate Republicans are now united in adopting earmark bans. We hope President Obama will follow through on his support for an earmark ban by pressing Democratic leaders to join House and Senate Republicans in taking this critical step to restore public trust.”

“It is an honor to once again earn the confidence and support of such an overwhelming number of voters in California’s 45th Congressional District.

“It is clear that the American people have rejected the tax and spend policies of the Obama Administration and the liberal Leadership in Congress and are looking to the Republican Party for real change.

“On behalf of California’s 45th Congressional District, I will fight tirelessly in Congress to rebuild our Nation’s economy and revive the American dream for future generations.”

As a desert resident for more than 30 years, I care deeply about our community and especially about our future. That is why I believe it is critically important that we elect the right kind of leaders to help guide us through these difficult and challenging times.

I have known our local congresswoman, Mary Bono Mack, for many years. I witnessed firsthand how she and her late husband, Sonny, worked so hard to revive the Palm Springs business community and bring common-sense solutions to city hall and then to Washington, D.C. I know how devoted Mary is to the people of our district and her deep love for the desert region.

As a small businesswoman, Mary owned and managed a successful restaurant in Palm Springs and has always supported a wide range of worthwhile causes throughout our valley. When she ran for Congress to succeed her late husband, many of us rallied behind her because we knew that she had the business experience and behind-the-scenes knowledge of how government works to get things done. And we have all benefited greatly from her many accomplishments.

America has been good to me and my family, and I believe that the American dream is still alive. We are facing challenging times but we are not the only generation to face adversity. I have had the great good fortune of being successful in a number of business ventures and I have learned a thing or two along the way about what kind of policies are needed to ensure that our economy gets back on track and America remains competitive in an increasingly global marketplace.

That is why it is so imperative that we elect leaders who truly understand how to solve the many complex economic and public policy issues that must be addressed. We cannot elect leaders who believe that higher taxes, more regulation and bigger bureaucracies are the answer.

Make no mistake, I am not anti-government nor do I believe that any one party holds all the answers. I believe, like Mary, that it is the individual who makes the difference. Mary Bono Mack is just such an individual — she has made a positive difference in the lives of literally millions of people. Mary gets it, she listens, and she works hard every day on behalf of the people who have elected her time and again.
