We Support Mary Bono Mack (Desert Sun)

Election 2010 is of historic importance nationally and also in California’s 45th Congressional District.
A floundering economy, near-record unemployment, a glut of foreclosures and a host of other woes have dominated headlines in the Coachella Valley and beyond for months. It has been a painful time in our cities, our county and our nation.
Recovery, we know, won’t happen overnight. But it also won’t happen without strong political leadership representing our corner of Southern California in Congress.
That’s why we are supporting Mary Bono Mack, the Republican incumbent, in November’s election. We believe she is the strongest candidate for the 45th District, offering a reasoned and moderate voice in Washington on the issues that matter most to her constituents.

Voters in the 45th District this year are blessed to have two outstanding candidates for Congress. We have been impressed with the campaign and candidacy of Democrat Steve Pougnet, Palm Springs’ mayor since 2007. He has identified the most critical topics in the 45th and has been a tireless force on the campaign trail. A third candidate, Bill Lussenheide of the American Independent Party, has not played a significant role in the campaign.
Pougnet is not an expert on all the issues that dominate this race. In contrast, Bono Mack has worked to not only know them thoroughly, but to also articulate a vision that addresses them. At a time of great political divide in our country, we believe she brings much-needed pragmatism and a spirit of collaboration to the job.
Bono Mack sees that out-of-control regulation is choking business and that ever-expanding government supercharged by President Barack Obama is not the answer to this nation’s problems. She supports extending the Bush tax cuts, as does Pougnet. She knows the country, swimming in annual federal deficits of more than $1 trillion, faces fiscal meltdown.
And while both candidates have been sincere in their beliefs, Bono Mack has a proven track record of being an effective member of Congress. She should continue to serve, especially because it appears Republicans are poised to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Now is a time for her to become an even greater force on Capitol Hill.
